People asked me what I basically use to proces my kick at the start of my mix. Well, I don't use to much at the beginning. You can always come back at it later, but some things are essential to me.

  1.  Never leave promotion to the other guy. Depending on your point of view don't count on the label, band or publicist to do their jobs. Do it yourself or it may not get done.

  2. Know your niche market(s) or hire/befriend someone who does.

  3. Always think of the fans first when making decisions.

  4. Start early.  Pre-promote. It allows time for viral buzz (aka free promotion) to build and ensures you’ll get you a larger share of a discretionary spending.

Fresh from its Paris workshop, the Squarp Instruments Pyramid is a slimline, minimalistic hardware sequencer loaded with features. Of course, even the term ‘sequencer’ is open to misinterpretation these days, since it can conjure ideas ranging from the short voltage loops of a Moog 960 right up to a computer-based Digital Audio Workstation. When it comes to the mix, the treatment of samples mainly depends on whether the sound has already been processed.

If you’re using a commercial sample library – a string or drum library, say – or you’ve sampled a sound yourself – from a synth or using found sounds – you can usually treat it the same way you’d treat the original sound source. Compression, EQ and other effects are all fair game.

You asked, and you shall receive, Sonicbids blog readers. Per multiple requests, here's my guide to, "When the hell do I start turning these knobs, and where do they go?" But before we begin, I offer you the fine print: These references are general ideas for where to begin to look for sonic issues with particular sounds, instruments, and voices.
